This is the story of a young child that wanders into the forest in search of a fun activity. What the boy is unaware of is that the forest is under a powerful enchantment, and as he ventures deeper and deeper into the woods, his body begins to change and take on the form of various mysterious and unique animals. As he journeys back toward his home and a return to normalcy, he eventually leaves the woods for an underwater journey that transforms him into various sea creatures. Finally, he takes to the skies to find his home, turning into all manners of bizarre avians and other flying creatures. With no understanding of what is happening to him, his journey home comes with the understanding that he is the perfect shape already for whom he is meant to be.
Every two-page spread of this playful romp of a story pairs a rhyming poetic description of an imaginary and imaginative creature with a surprisingly detailed and thorough illustration that gives shape to the words on the opposite page. The snappy rhymes and inventive and entirely unique creatures immediately call to mind a Seuss-like experience, delighting children with silly and impossible life that exists solely to create wonder and entertainment. The full-page pictures are positively saturated with rich colors, and it can be fun to follow along with the text a line at a time and match the written details to the drawn example of the creature on the other side. Young readers will enjoy the fantastic and light-hearted journey of the protagonist and may be inspired to design some bizarre new lifeforms of their own and continue where the book leaves off.
