Life has never been easy for Linda Hemmer. She lost a child and went through a divorce. She has a strained relationship with her sister, Trish. Now, she is in a dangerous situation because of an undercover police assignment. She is caring for a child named Tucker, and his father, Nate, is part of a human trafficking ring. Linda has to put up with Nate for the sake of the investigation. Every chance he gets, he rapes her. One day, Nate goes too far, and Tucker shoots him in self-defense. Soon after, Linda learns that her sister, Trish, was killed. It is revealed that her murder might be tied up to Linda's abduction years ago when she was a child.
In her work, Thomsen tackles domestic abuse and how it can lead to deadly situations with dire consequences. She also points out the fact that children raised in these unsafe environments can affect them deeply—mentally and psychologically. Similarly, the author has managed to give each character a voice that makes them stand out. For instance, she depicts Linda as a determined and caring woman who is ready to sacrifice herself for her loved ones. Thomsen also plays around with the theme that all is not what it seems. There is a serial killer on the loose, so it makes the characters keep guessing. In addition, the book exposes the harsh realities of being an undercover cop dealing with extremely dangerous individuals for a very long time. Readers will like this book because of its many twists and turns.
