American Insanity
by LeRoy (Le) Cossette

"Former president Trump managed to make America energy independent, make our southern border the most secure in the history of our country."

While Cossette acknowledges from the outset that his work is rooted in his opinion of the United States’ impending political downfall, it is undeniably an impassioned plea for the nation to examine itself, look in the mirror, and see the swift transformation of the country’s politics for what it is. Though the author’s stance is unquestionable, the intrigue and validity of his thoughts lie in his ability to emphasize the importance of setting aside differences and focusing on the greater good. He suggests that the very integrity of the U.S. Constitution is at stake, being threatened unceasingly by radical beliefs that are determined to uproot the values, morals, and ambitions that have become the bedrock of the American way.

Cossette theorizes a number of reasons why America finds itself in such a tenuous political climate. Nevertheless, the key reasons, he argues, are complacency, a weakened “mind and spirit,” and a woke culture that is hunting for retribution “for wrongs they never experienced.” Digging deeper, the author’s concrete examples on gun ownership and school curriculum hit home on what will likely be critical conversations in the 2024 election. Perhaps what lends the greatest amount of credibility to his narrative is his own upbringing. Growing up in a devout Catholic Democrat family, he is the spawn of immigrants who seized the opportunity to be Americans. For example, one of his uncles fittingly contributed to American life by serving in the Korean War and being embedded in state politics.

Cossette yearns for the Democratic Party of the Kennedy area, decrying what it has turned into and the veil that blinds so many longtime Democrats and their inability to see the Democratic Party from his perspective—as Marxist. Using his own example of what happens when a country meddles in affairs that are not their own, the author highlights the PTSD and other struggles that have plagued him since returning from the Vietnam War. He romanticizes a Tom Sawyer-esque childhood and juxtaposes it with the harsh realities of being drafted and finding himself on the beaches of Vietnam, where it was do or die.

As the work progresses, Cossette breaks down the Articles of Confederation and the Amendments to help audiences understand the intended role of government and how Democrats and even the RINOs (Republicans in name only) are wreaking havoc on the Constitution. Interestingly, he surveys a less publicized aspect of the historic overturning of Roe V. Wade, the Supreme Court leak, and how unusual it was that the perpetrator could not be found despite there being only eighty-two total employees. While describing the treatment of Roger Stone, Michael Flynn, and other known President Trump associates as harassment and intimidation, the author segues into highlighting the impact that Trump had in helping bring the spotlight back onto the United States.

Above all else, Cossette is unafraid to tackle sensitive and controversial issues that have polarized the United States. The events of January 6th, 2021, are one such discussion that he successfully breaks down with his own observations, adamantly acknowledging that the overwhelming majority were protesting peacefully. With a voice as authentic and raw as the author’s own life experiences, Cossette’s work adds a meaningful dimension to the conversation about the direction of the American way.
