This third and final book of The Girl, the Pendant, and the Portal trilogy picks up in the middle of the consequences of the previous book. With Enlitra nearly destroyed, Faith’s father, the powerful entity known as He, turns his attention to Faith and Tomas’ hometown. From the living, he sucks them so dry of life that they turn to dust. From those already dead, he raises them from the earth to descend on Faith and her friends in an unrelenting army. Their retribution will come with the help of old and new friends, including Amita, a mysterious girl who survived the annihilation of everyone else in the town. In the very end, Faith will need the help of all of her friends and all her control of the power of En to defeat her father and save the world.
Reynoso opens the final book in the series right in the middle of the action and never slows down. With little to no moments of rest, her characters are placed in impossible situations but use their perseverance and trust in each other to pull through. There are a few dropped plotlines within the narrative, and, like with most good genre fiction, some disbelief has to be suspended. Still, this book will undoubtedly interest those who are drawn to body horror and zombie-apocalypse stories with its high-action, fast-paced storytelling. Reynoso’s descriptions of the eerie sounds of the dead in otherwise silent environments and of Faith’s bodily transformations while fighting are vivid. This book will take the author's old and new fans on a thrill-filled ride.
