Baptism by Fire
by Abraham Moreno
Stratton Press

"Only the strongest reach deep down inside when all hope is lost, when the light ceases to visibly exist, and it is only then, that a fire deep within will ignite."

After a terrible car accident that injured a friend's son, twenty-four-year-old Abraham is trying to get his life back on track. His application for the San Antonio Police Department is stalled, though, and he can't hold a minimum-wage retail job. Relationships with family and old friends plus a budding romance add to the pressure he is feeling. The only thing that keeps him optimistic is his faith.

The story follows Abraham through his journey to self-fulfillment and happiness. Abraham's character is fleshed out and engaging and is the true highlight of the story. His frustrations at being at a standstill in life even though he is college-educated are relatable and timely. While readers can picture him clearly, the rest of the large cast is not as developed. Because the main character has the same name as the author, readers may wonder whether the book is an autobiography inspired by Moreno's life or pure fiction. Regardless of which genre it falls in, this later-stage coming-of-age novel is sure to connect with young adult and adult readers.

Those who gravitate toward books that emphasize the Christian faith may also enjoy this one. The main character's inner dialogues are the most moving ones in the book. Abraham's anguish and confusion will undoubtedly resonate with many readers because his trials are realistic. These moments in the book can give insight to readers of all ages and backgrounds. Overall, this is a book with the potential to offer hope that obstacles can be overcome with hard work and faith.
