Daniel Cross thought the request to authenticate a diamond in Namibia was run-of-the-mill until he was shot at, and bullets felled the woman accompanying him. Cross flees the country by the skin of his teeth. While attempting to reach out to his contact about the parties interested in the diamond, he finds himself enmeshed in a terrorist plot with far-reaching ramifications. As a few of Cross' allies turn up dead, he becomes emotionally invested in locating the conspirators involved in a plan to unleash an apocalyptic plague that will level most of the world. Cross must collaborate with various intelligence agencies, such as the CIA and MI5, and travel to China, Russia, and the United States in order to curtail the sinister agenda of a transnational cabal. Cross will need to utilize his superior intellect, along with a weapon or two, to take down these formidable adversaries.
An average citizen finds himself in the middle of international intrigue in this suspenseful thriller. Bott's novel evokes comparisons to John LeCarre's The Night Manager and Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Identity. Daniel Cross is a fascinating protagonist, as he is both a sensitive man in expressing his emotions, yet he can be cold and detached when exacting his revenge. The book enables the hero to evolve from a rake, entangled in various short-term flings, to a lovestruck man willing to do anything to be with the love of his life. The crisis at the heart of the story is compelling because it is believable, and the reader will find themselves hooked as Cross ingratiates himself with the key suspects while being inconspicuous in his investigation.
