Black Butterfly: Transform Your Pain into Your Purpose
by Carla A. Vincent
Archway Publishing

"For the longest time, I saw no real purpose in my life, but God knew all along."

Debut author and counselor Vincent shares lessons to help others that she's learned from her personal struggles. Overcoming one's stresses and moving forward in a dynamic, meaningful way requires strong motivation, which arises from one's attraction to the God-created energy that exists eternally. This "law of attraction," Vincent believes, is "actually a lifestyle," allowing its proponents to advance in all spheres of life. Chapters cover such vital qualities as using one's imagination, controlling and channeling one's feelings, and acting as if one's goals are already, or very soon to be, met. Vincent records her vision of success while reminding readers of the many barriers she overcame to reach her current level of accomplishment. Each chapter concludes with verses from energizing songs, scriptural quotations, and exercises for the reader to undertake in key areas—spiritual, physical, financial, career, and relationships. These exercises emphasize hopes and advise realistic moves from negative to positive, often accomplished with simple, practical alterations in how one pictures oneself and one's future.

Vincent, a military veteran of the Afghanistan war, had much to overcome personally and lived for some time, she states, in a kind of emotional cocoon. She found her talent as a writer by talking to herself, investing in herself through workshops and various exercises such as journaling and vision boards, writing encouraging notes to herself, and making moves to get to the new, anticipated levels. As her book proves, she has successfully developed the ability not only to recount her challenges but to organize and offer straightforward counseling and realistic steps for her readers to undertake. She quotes from other counselors, offering a useful bibliography for further reading. Vincent's book, based on Christian principles but equally accessible to all believers, can be used as a methodology for individuals and groups seeking inspiration and motivation at any stage of life.
