"You read books or see movies about this type of love, and I used to think, oh, that’s just a story. But now I know it’s real."

In this sweet love story with a surprising twist, Nikki, a high-powered real estate agent and model, meets her match in Jami, a criminal attorney whose initial life dream of becoming a surgeon was cut short by a disease-causing progressive blindness. Their love grows organically. Although Nikki is ready for a relationship from the start, Jami is hesitant given his history of heartbreak and concerns over his developing blindness. Because of this, they keep their connection friendly at first.

Nikki takes Jami jogging, rock climbing, and even skydiving to “open him up,” as she puts it, to new adventures. As they explore their hometown of Chicago, they cannot deny the deep feelings they’ve developed for each other, and their new friendship turns to romance. Certain of their strong connection, they marry quickly in a simple, small ceremony. They cozily settle into married life until an unexpected tragedy threatens everything they have built together.

This is a tender story of a blossoming relationship between two genuine, good-hearted people. It is a fairly quick read but leaves the reader with a sense of warmth and contentment. Although some of the language and conversations seem stilted at times, this does not take away from the magic of this simple love story. An unanticipated twist toward the end provides a jolt of excitement to the plot and serves to further highlight the devotion between the two main characters. In the end, the reader is left with a feeling akin to curling up beside a fire on a cold winter’s day, where one is cozy, uplifted, and at peace.
