Star is a young girl who dances across the lawn as if she were dreaming of becoming a ballerina. As she dances through the flowers, she sees the butterflies twirling overhead. One special butterfly, Twinkle, is always with Star, gliding just above her, until one day when Twinkle is no longer to be found. Star becomes sad as she has lost her sweet friend and pirouetting companion.
With her mother’s guidance, Star comes to realize that she will always remember how special Twinkle was in her life. But this doesn’t stop her sadness. Star’s mother finds a lovely pony named Luna to become Star’s companion in exploring nature. But there is still something missing because Twinkle is no longer there. Then one day while at school, Star notices how sad some other students are and invites them all to her home to become acquainted with Luna. While the children are enjoying petting the pony, the butterflies glide overhead. Star realizes that she has become truly happy again.
Stuart has brought nature, animals, and people together in this picture book that captures the imagination with a creative story and colorful illustrations. Star’s love of the outdoor world can urge children outside to find their very own butterfly. By inviting a group of diverse friends to meet Luna, the author has Star sharing her good fortune, which in the end has Star feeling happy and grateful.
