Bow Wow is a friendly little dog who lives with his family in a peaceful neighborhood. He often gets lonely when the parents leave for work and the children—Carisa and Alan—leave for school. He admires the freedom enjoyed by animals such as squirrels, mice, and a red cardinal, but being stuck at home, he tends to hide under beds and pout. All that changes one day when a delicious fragrance draws him to an open window, and Bow Wow falls outdoors. He goes on an adventure that includes a trip through town and into the park. When the postman recognizes Bow Wow from his usual mail route, he gives the dog a ride home, and from then on, Bow Wow is happy to patiently await the return of his family each day.
This children’s story is filled with beautiful illustrations that are perfect to pull in young readers, especially those who love dogs. It is also clear from Bow Wow’s trip into town that despite his loneliness, more people are familiar with him than he might realize, and several of them look out for him in their own ways. Even the red cardinal seems to follow him around. In a way, it presents a lesson in how someone can impact the lives of others without knowing it until a situation arises like the one Bow Wow found himself in after falling out the window. Additionally, the story stresses the importance of staying optimistic rather than pouting amid difficult situations. Overall, this tale is a fun and fluffy reading experience.
