Oftentimes when studying any part of the Bible, history and the passage of time serve as a barrier that separates the modern world we live in from the universal lessons being taught. In this book, the author shares her discovery and study into just how much both the Old Testament and the New Testament focus on how important it is that everyone does what they can to help those with less. With an eye toward specific verses throughout the Bible that are presented to the reader and modern interpretations of the inequities that still exist, one will see that all are called to be open and charitable within their means and that money is not the only way in which people can lend a hand.
It is a refreshing and profound juxtaposition to see biblical verses used as a call to action to modern dilemmas, not in a nebulous way but with direct relations and examples. According to the author, the Lord helped prepare her for seventeen years in this subject area, and her subsequent experiences on mission trips, work with Crisis Assistance Ministry in Charlotte, etc., have clearly aided this book’s teaching. Just as in ancient times, there are people walking the streets with little to eat and virtually no means to survive. While many are not in a position to meet all the needs of the poor, this book shows that there is still much to consider about what each caring individual can do. Examining the economy, capitalism, the ruling class, and more, this thought-provoking and convicting book shows how treating people justly and in a truly Christian way can enrich the lives of all concerned.
