Coffee with Jesus

"I guess I have an honest face, because she said that it was okay, she trusted me, not even knowing me!"

Uniquely structured, this book's narrative is seemingly a candid discourse, representing what a conversation over coffee would look like between the author and Jesus. Block dives into many elements of his life, spanning his childhood, youth, and the present, while simultaneously touching on several themes and experiences. Simple yet authentic, his voice shines through the work and provides insight into his life and times. He isn't afraid to tackle serious issues or unleash his humor, both qualities that readers will find endearing and relatable.

Block's narrative has a poetic feel as it ruminates over a myriad of topics, with each section a talking point to help Jesus envision the snapshot of his recollections. Whether Block is talking about his abject ineptitude with computers or having a full-grown skunk as a pet, he holds nothing back, allowing Jesus (and the reader) an opportunity to see both his good qualities and imperfections. In particular, the author's memories of his father as a soldier in World War II as a part of the Thunderbolt division of Patton's Third Army are riveting. Block has a knack for capturing the essence of an individual through an anecdote, and the interaction he describes between the courageous and resolute nature of his father and the cowardice of a captain is glaring.

The stories fall across a wide spectrum, touching on anything and everything from his fear of drowning and convoluted encounters with policemen over speeding tickets to playing the Indian flute and being a guest on the Kentucky Speedway. Over a cup of coffee with the Lord, Block encapsulates the experiences and learnings of his life to show that God's blessings have not been taken for granted.
