Daisy Moves to America
by Elyssa Nicole Trust

"Mum says, ‘Embrace the way you speak. It makes you special and unique. You are sincere and strong and brave, so that’s the way you must behave.’"

This vibrantly illustrated children's book follows Daisy as she and her family move to America from her comfortable and familiar life in the United Kingdom. Leaving the only life she knows behind, Daisy must overcome the peer pressure and bullying that follows her around her new school every day. She struggles to make friends because she is considered different. Not only does she find herself using words that Americans don't use (because of variations in dialect), but her classmates also laugh at her accent. Though her classmates tell her that she needs to change to fit in, only by learning to embrace herself for who she is can she start adjusting to life in America.

Trust cleverly makes this story easy to read and follow along for children by writing it like a poem with a sing-song rhyme scheme. She also targets the perfect age group for the topic of diversity so that children can learn at an early age to embrace others from all walks of life. Other themes include loving yourself and accepting your differences as unique qualities. Aside from this, there's also plenty to learn inside for children and adults alike. For example, Daisy goes through various words used in the UK that differ from how they are used in the States, many of which can be surprising for those only exposed to American English. Overall, this book is a perfect way for a parent to spend quality time with their child. Members of both generations will enjoy the book for its fun writing and the warm illustrations that accompany every rhyme.
