Three adventurers receive an enigmatic message about a mission and passage to the island nation of Sol. Dawn, a satyr bard, and the bounty hunters Zau (a changeling barbarian) and Urania (a half-demon thief) are to meet someone known only as the boy in blue. When they arrive in the port city of Alpherg, they quickly face off against the local militia, who are accosting a pair of goblins.
Soon after, their contact makes an appearance, and the three companions learn that his boyish looks disguise a powerful being from another realm. He informs the group that they must put their main mission on hold and help him overthrow the new, tyrannical king. After meeting several odd and magical shopkeepers while evading the king’s guards, the group learns they have contacts inside the castle and a group of draconic druids who will aid them in assaulting the castle to capture the king.
Yuma’s fantasy novel is the first volume in a new series. His main characters have interesting backgrounds and skill sets, and many of the people they meet are mysterious and engaging. Despite a few minor grammatical errors, the book is a quick read and does not have the long-winded exposition that often appears in the genre to slow down the experience. This first book serves to introduce the characters as it sets up a larger quest to undertake in future volumes. Yuma has created a few imaginative races based on the stars and wishes. Fantasy lovers who don’t like the lengthy reads required by many series may find that Yuma’s tale is just right for them.
