Cameron Asher is a young, brilliant, charismatic college student who, unfortunately, has a big problem. He has allowed his drinking to get out of control to the point that his roommates have taken to keeping tabs on him. Even with this problem, he remains a straight-A student with ambitions to become a doctor. Cameron is at a loss when his grandfather, the man he is closest to, dies of cancer. He meets Lydia, who slowly brings him out of his depression. Years later, he sees her again and realizes he is in love with her. Lydia also shares this feeling, but Cameron’s drinking and an unexpected tragedy keep them apart. Cameron has turned his back on God because of anger towards his father, and the devout Lydia seems far from reach. A forced trip to work on a ranch in Wyoming, however, begins to change Cameron. Will he ever find faith? Will Lydia be able to accept him if he doesn’t?
The novel is well-written, with fascinating, well-rounded characters. Cameron, even with all his problems, is very likable. One roots for him to find peace and love. He is a loyal friend, even when he is faced with helping one who doesn’t deserve his help. There are strong Christian themes within the novel, and one relates to Cameron’s struggle of faith brought on by a pious and unbending father. The novel deals with family dysfunction, alcoholism, and promiscuity, so it may not be appropriate for some younger readers. Vivid descriptions of both Wyoming and North Carolina are well done, and readers can easily envision each setting. This is a mesmerizing and thoughtful work that will keep readers engaged from the first page until the last.
