"This journal may be used daily as a morning, midday, or evening pick-me-up to provide spiritual insight for your quiet time with the Lord."

Monthly inspirational poems and daily spiritual messages comprise this caringly conceived guide by author and educator Howard. The year begins with a poetic heralding:

"It's a new day and a new year.
The outcome of it is not clear—
But I will not fear, because Christ
My Savior I revere!"

As is the case with each daily portion, the entry for the first day of January includes a stirring title, a short poem or encouraging phrase, a verse of biblical scripture, a sermonette of wise words from the author herself, a prayer asking for the Lord's help appropriate to the day, and some open lines for the reader to write their own meditations based on the offering. Throughout the year, the same template is utilized. The reader may wish to move ahead to a particular date of significance, such as a birthday or anniversary of a special event, which will be easily done given the book's chronological format. As well, dates that affect society as a whole are especially noted, such as July 4th, when readers are advised to "Be of Good Courage," or this subtle but powerful offering on September 11th that reminds them that the Lord is "the shield of protection," and, therefore, they need not fear "the enemy." Not surprisingly, Christmas Day is given special attention, with thoughts from Howard that lead from a little baby lying in a manger of hay to the growth of God's chosen one who was sent to save humankind by being one of us. The year ends in this heart-centered guide with a look back at the time that has passed and an exhortation to be humble and trust in the Lord.

An ordained minister, Howard, now retired from high school teaching, has taken a particular interest in poetry as a means to convey spiritual truth and here uses it generously to enhance the work that she has created. The couplets that open each day's entries are presented to underscore that day's predominating theme. The book opens and closes with several of Howard's poetic compositions, all showing her positive stance regarding how lives can be lived and improved through scripture and Christian practice. In a brief introduction, Howard relates that she experienced a stressful situation for seven years that led her to try to rely on God's word as she invites others to do. That trying time proved to her the need for a daily, deep reminder to strengthen one's core beliefs. Through her higher education in clinical pastoral counseling and other honors, she brings to her readers a well-rooted understanding of scriptural truth and its possibility for transformation. She presents these easily accessible meditations, graced with sensitive graphics, in a sincere hope that they will influence others as she was to seek God's love and the evidence of that love in their lives. By allowing her readers to record memories and ideas arising out of the daily segments, Howard has constructed a motivational manual that can be used for both quiet, individual inspiration and lively group study.
