"I am more than my face.
I am more than my hair.
I am more than my skin."

It has been said that a "poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom," which is an encouraging promise for young minds trying to make sense of themselves and the world around them. Poems are a timeless, literary art form often used to communicate complex ideas or emotions in a simple, fun, and visceral way unique to both its audience and reader. In this book, Duncan-Laud provides a rich variety of literary techniques (from rhyming pairs to metaphors and similes), perspectives, and themes. The latter range from simple concepts such as animals and weather to more complex ones that center around family, inclusion, and learning that are used to actively engage young readers.

While some poetry books for children are sparse in content, with only a select number of poems, this book serves up a wealth of poems, providing a feast for young minds. There is even a reference section at the end to help them digest the learning concepts used within the book. Furthermore, each verse is paired well with a captivating, bright, and inclusive illustration.

Although each poem is bordered with a translucent background, it can be a little difficult to see the complete picture through it. However, the colors of each poem's background and border nicely complement the image that they overlay. Overall, this adds to the beauty of each poem. Additionally, the poems are of varying length and degree, which delightfully adds to their appeal and ability to engage the reader. The author's collection is a hidden gem that will make a wonderful and entertaining addition to any young reader's poetry book collection. It will make both adults and children laugh, smile, and reflect.
