Survival seems impossible when The Enemy is closing in on the small band of people hiding deep in the woods. They have been able to carve out a somewhat normal existence. Each one was a stranger, but now they are a family. Their camp has remained undetected—until now. There are too many to fight this time, so they must run again. Sam, Sarah, and the other refugees have already endured unthinkable horrors. With hope dwindling, they work together to set out to sea to find anywhere in the world The Enemy is not. They make a harrowing escape into the unknown. Whatever is out there is better than the brutality and certain death that awaits them if they are caught.
Blocher expertly constructs a story with the universal theme of how humans can collaborate in extraordinary ways to survive devastating events. There is a balance of intense action and ordinarily mundane moments, providing the perfect vehicle for character development. This opportunity to view the characters as multidimensional deepens the experience for the reader. Blocher utilizes dynamic dialogue to draw readers into the scenes.
