After her best friend, Rog, is killed in a firefight where she is wounded, Jen leaves the military, taking Rog's service dog with her. She takes over work at her family's cabin rental business. The work is easy, and she isn't struggling for money, but Jen realizes she misses the intelligence work she did in the military. Two kidnapping incidents in a matter of a day get her interested in gathering intelligence on a human trafficking ring. The handsome homeland security agent Zack Julion makes the work even more tempting. When Jen's lifelong friend, Paulie, is targeted by the human traffickers, Jen and Zack realize they need to work quickly. Unbeknownst to any of them, danger from Jen's past is also hunting her. As the risks grow more deadly, so does the heat in Jen and Zack's relationship. Unfortunately, each carries baggage and fears that lead to poor decisions.
Batt offers up a crime thriller that consciously chooses vocally Christian protagonists. She writes with a clear sense of good and evil and portrays her characters similarly. Each chapter is titled for the character from whose perspective it is written. The writing is simple, easy to read, and grammatically clean. The thriller part is fairly clichéd and not greatly detailed, and there are issues with repeated information. However, Batt has purposely written this book to appeal to those readers who enjoy thrillers but don't want all the graphic details and gritty realism common in many books of the genre. Readers who want a book without the language, sex, and gore while still offering action and police work combined with a love story can find all of that in this title.
