This inspirational nonfiction work tells the story of the author’s troubled childhood of neglect and abuse and her rise from the depths of despair. Through her grandmother, Inglis learns the teachings of Christ and the importance of prayer, which help her to heal and overcome past abuses. She states, “Having been a past victim of abuse and molestation and having had a history of personal withdrawal and isolation tendencies, no one but the Trinity and the blood of the Son Jesus Christ could have helped me overcome that dilemma in my life.”
Inglis’ work is an account of how she found the courage to forgive. Filled with scriptures and commentary, Inglis' book gives readers a poignant glimpse into the life of a survivor. Her comments concerning her grandmother are prevalent throughout the work. It is apparent that this early guidance helped Inglis to return to her childhood faith at a time when her life was falling apart. “Grandma not only instilled in me the love she had, but a love that’s even greater—that love of Jesus Christ and the love for Jesus Christ.”
Inglis begins her book by first telling of her childhood. Having been abused both physically and sexually beginning at age five, she reached the depths of despair. “It is very disheartening when you feel that no one cares. I felt that I was put in a shed with a little window, and it was opened for light to shine only when someone desired my service. It was heartbreaking, and I felt lost.” Inglis tried to take her own life and survived when a family friend found her. Her retelling of this devastating scene from her life is hard to read, as her family was more concerned with the opinions of others and the shame her act would bring to the family. Her life took a turn into alcohol and promiscuity, but that early faith instilled by her grandmother was still there. She eventually got her life together and returned to a life of faith.
Inglis’ candid account offers hope to those who are suffering that there is a way to live which brings peace. What comes across in the narrative is the author’s passion to reveal to others what faith in Christ can do to help them overcome obstacles in their lives. “He took my depression to joy, loving me when I felt I was not loved, looking over me when I was shunned, scorned, and abused. Jesus, I know, is my greatest love who I can call on 24/7 without reservation and get a response.” Her desire is to help bring as many as possible into the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ, and every page of this book clearly reflects this.
This very personal book is written in a conversational tone, which helps readers enter smoothly into the author’s story. Inglis also includes helpful scriptures which have touched her personally and then offers useful elaborations on their meaning in her life. She writes with sincerity and passion about both the love she has for Christ and the love she feels from Him. Those who enjoy inspirational stories with strong Christian themes will find much to like about this work.
