Reid loves to golf. He is excited as his next round is taking place underwater around the island of Hawaii. As he gets ready for the first hole, another golfer, Ollie the Octopus, joins him. Reid loves new friends, so he and Ollie play together. It isn’t too long before their pair becomes four, adding Stella Starfish and Willow the mermaid. As the group is playing the back nine, the course marshal speaks with them. He informs the group that a humpback whale and her new calf are in the area. He requests that the golfers don’t disturb the whales if they see them.
Fortunately for Reid and his group, they come across the whales around hole sixteen. The whales are singing as they swim by the golfers, so Reid and his friends stop and listen to their song. Once the whales leave, the golfers finish their round and have lunch together. Willow asks Reid where he plans to play golf next. Reid replies that he would love to golf on the moon with astronauts.
Fitz’s picture book includes colorful illustrations that portray the action. The tale is told simply and is short enough to be read as a bedtime story. The character of Reid is friendly and optimistic, and the idea of playing a game on the ocean floor with sea creatures should appeal to many small children. Some parents may have little ones who may not know what the golf terms mean or understand all of the conversation about whales, offering a golden opportunity for some additional parental interaction and teaching moments. The bright colors and smiling sea creatures will also help with engagement. Kids who love golf or underwater adventures will be the most interested listeners in this unique reading adventure.
