"The tornado whips me around and around as it rises precipitously above the ground."

Zan is looking forward to her high school graduation. After a strange incident with her high school nemesis, Chad, she is confused when he says, “I am your shadow. I will also be your knight in shining armor…” Zan is then swept up in a vortex and delivered to the family estate where her sister Mercedes plans to prevent her from going through her immersion, or right of passage, in which she will perish or discover her true calling. Mercedes fears that Zan will take her place as ruler, but as she gets to know Zan, she feels she may not have anything to fear from her sister. When it is learned Zan is being held by Mercedes, their father, Vicente, plans to rescue her from the castle so that she can undergo her immersion. What will Zan’s immersion bring forth for the family? Will she try to take Mercedes’ place as leader? And what role, if any, does Chad play in this strange turn in her life?

Revels grabs the reader’s attention from the beginning of this mesmerizing fantasy in which the inhabitants of Earth are not fully aware of the alien creatures living with them. Zan knows of her bloodline and fears her extraterrestrial abilities will be discovered by her fellow earthlings. After Mercedes kidnaps her sister and the family sets out to ensure Zan undergoes her immersion, the family dynamics and background are slowly revealed through each well-rounded character. Revels draws the tension out as Mercedes questions Zan’s motives, as well as her own, which have been birthed from jealousy. Revels sets up the perfect story of family drama and political intrigue on an inner terrestrial level. The novel is sure to engage young readers who enjoy strong female characters who must discover strength under unusual circumstances.
