A kind dedication for parents begins this sweet book. The story explores a beautiful day in the park with children playing while a man relaxes and watches everything around him. There are butterflies, chipmunks, birds, and a creek with fish swimming. Mama Cat is there with her two kittens. They are enjoying this exciting day of new beginnings. This is also the first day of a new adventure for the kittens who play and sleep near their mom. Then Mama Cat has to leave them. Unfortunately, she has an accident, leaving the kittens motherless.
Luckily, two children, Mara and Aldo, find the abandoned kittens and take them home. They are accepted by the family, including Penny, the dog, and her puppies. As these are very young kittens, the family looks for a way to feed them. While this is happening, Penny brings the kittens into her family's fold and begins nursing them and treating them as her own, solving the problem of feedings. The family is happy with the new additions to the household.
The author has crafted a cute book for kids with excellent illustrations. It is nicely written, and the story is one of love and acceptance. The value of having pets is explored, while the parents show their children the importance of helping others. Parents may wish to be prepared, though, to address questions from their children regarding the "accident" that happened to Momma Cat and why she abandoned the kittens. This book may be the one that helps adults teach younger ones about death. However, the book's intended audience will likely relate the most to the story of having kittens and dogs and the wonder they bring in this nicely told tale.
