A good friendship can solve some of the problems in our lives, which is the main moral of this picture book. Pisel has created a children's book about a tractor named Brown who is unhappy with how he is being used on the farm. The problem is that he is just sitting there. He wants to be like the other tractors, but it isn't until Farmer Frank buys him at an auction that he gets his chance. He gets a new lease on life when Farmer Frank has him help feed the animals.
Ultimately, it's their friendship that helps Brown become what he wants to be. However, this is not the only moral of this story. There is also that Farmer Frank likes Brown the way he is, despite the fact that he is a little dull in color. That's a good message for children (and most adults): if you truly want to be someone's friend, you don't care what they wear or how they look. What matters is their personality.
In general, the writing flows, and the plot is clear. Pisel's writing is simplistic enough for children to understand. It's also a plus that elementary-aged children will be able to read it on their own. The hand-drawn illustrations by Terry Stearns add even more whimsy to the story. This is an adorable story that, as noted, has clear and teachable lessons. Kindergarten or first-grade teachers will find this a satisfactory book for their classroom libraries. This book alone shows that Pisel has a knack for writing children's books.
