"Some people say that I am her guardian angel, but I am not. She is my guardian angel."

Lt. Ripley, formerly an abused and abandoned blue-eyed dog, tells this children's story about rescue, rehabilitation, and a new life with a good family who help her provide toys and hope to hundreds of children who experience a range of disadvantages. Lt. Ripley and her human mom practice patience and acceptance through their relationship with each other. Ripley has learned to trust her humans and become a symbol of possibilities to people in different communities through time. Her human relies on Ripley's and the other non-human household members to discern whom the family may trust and befriend among humans.

The book could benefit from additional editing. However, it tells a story that encompasses love, faith, patience, physical and emotional therapy, and the ultimate healing that results in Ripley's becoming a therapy dog in order to improve the quality of life for those who are receptive to her. Since the story is told from the dog's perspective, the author recounts the tale step by step from Ripley's living in an animal shelter and the multiple trials that both of them face. These include Ripley's knowing that she and her toy smell bad and may alienate people seeking to adopt her and dealing with the "loud" voice and strong attitude of her soon-to-be human mom. Later, Ripley endures multiple procedures to correct the physical problems that occurred from her past abuse. Additionally, she must adjust to the variety of beings in the household during and after her adoption. The illustrations and photographs enhance the text, enabling readers to see glimpses into Lt. Ripley's world. Children will likely be deeply touched, and their compassion for animals, as well as one another, may be enhanced.
