Gala Goda is an adventurer who hunts old ruins for treasure. Armed with his revolver, a whip, and his wit, he counts on his luck to carry him. He’s also not above boasting to impress a girl or to try to get free drinks. While traveling to an old temple, he is met by three mystics who fall from the sky after reincarnating. They have lost their memories, but each is motivated by a particular desire.
For example, Sephra is a warrior and wants a planet to save. Dagnarone is tired of the bloodshed and wants to find a more peaceful existence. Jerlone is a scholar and wants to forge alone, studying great texts. Gala uses his guile to convince the three to explore the temple with him. Things go poorly, but they survive. However, Sephra has the strongest will of the group and convinces the others that they should seek out a local king and formulate a plan to overthrow the worst despot in the area. Accompanying them is Yawonte, a fourth mystic who has waited many decades for their arrival. The group arrives just ahead of a massive invading army only to find the king they seek is a tyrant himself and is leaving his people to their fate.
Schweitzer’s adventure features a classic fantasy quest, although there are a few guns, grenades, and cars around. The writing is clean from grammatical mistakes and has clearly been carefully edited. However, one is never quite sure of the rules or limitations of the world the narrative is set in, which can lead to a disconnect as to the powers and weaknesses of the main characters. Still, the author’s characters engage both in discussions about their hopes and fears as well as in their high-octane battles with plenty of outlandish action to entertain readers.
