Having faced a slew of his own adverse circumstances, Ulrich’s work provides a roadmap to channel the inner inferno derived from fear, anger, and the ego into a healthy outlet that leads to kindness, blessings, and community. Further, he understands from experience that there are numerous distractions that can lead one astray in life, yet by using the word “f*cking,” he adds another level of urgency, desperation, and focus—an unyielding call to action.
Right off the bat, Ulrich leaves no doubt that this is not a book about religion or faith; it is simply about a Higher Power that can imbue life with an introspective self-understanding, a spirituality that can restore, heal, and transform to mold one into the man one was meant to be: kind, compassionate, collaborative, and fulfilled. Ulrich is an open book concerning his personal life, and this adds an air of raw authenticity to his words. In particular, when he is talking about addictions while providing an extensive list of attraction and aversion (fear-based) examples of these, he shares his own addiction and the serendipitous nature of how help came just as he had reached the height of his efforts, knowing he couldn’t combat it alone. That is where the individual benefits from a community and meetings that can provide perspective and reset one’s path toward the Higher Power.
As the work progresses, the author shares numerous anecdotes of trauma experienced by individuals and how it shaped their lives down to their roots. What’s worse is that trauma often has a generational impact and carries over, leaving the victim feeling like they are at fault. Ulrich’s work is a goldmine of resources to strengthen the will and resist fear, from mindfulness and meditation to rhythmic movement through walking. In short, this is a meaningful, growth-generating read.
