Quickies Too

"Sister, I always felt that a true sacrifice was giving up something dearly loved, so for Lent, I am giving up the Catholic Church!"

In a follow-up to his previous book of anecdotes and humorous musings, the author returns with another batch of dozens of moments designed to tickle readers’ funny bones. Early chapters focus on the author’s young days getting up to mischief in the town, pranking back and forth with friends, and making it through Catholic school. Most of the stories stand on their own, while others lead into the next, focusing on the author’s career as a photographer, folk musician, or working for his father’s brick company. Regardless of the subject matter, there’s a twist or a surprise waiting each time that proves that no matter where one is in life, there’s always room to take a step back, note any absurdities, and laugh at everything going on regardless of the circumstances.

Given the number of different experiences and opportunities that the author has been a part of, it would have been perfectly sensible for this to just function as a straightforward memoir. However, the author clearly has an appreciation for the humorous side of life and better exemplifies what he is about by approaching these memories and moments with a storyteller’s flair and an eye on the punchline. Each of these tales is, like the title of the book suggests, a brief remembrance with something to laugh or smile about packed into each one. Readers can find room in even the busiest of schedules to work their way through this anthology, injecting a mood lifter into whatever they might have going on in just a couple of minutes. Anyone familiar with the first book will find more of what they love here, and those just getting acquainted with the author and his life will be surprised by a light, entertaining read for any occasion.
