"We cannot control life’s difficult moments, but we can choose to make life less difficult. We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world, but we can control the atmosphere of our minds."

In this collection of reflective essays, McClendon traverses topics as varied as marriage and friendships to finances and politics, specifically those of the early 2000s. He provides a spiritual lens to most of his observations, weaving Bible stories and quotes throughout his message. Although the passages are grouped by theme into months of the year, the author emphasizes at the beginning that his words are not linear, and readers can easily pick which passages are most applicable to their lives.

McClendon delves into motivation, marriage, truth, motherhood and raising children, nationalism, gratitude, and simple faith. He adds pithy recollections from his own experiences as well as the stories of friends and historical figures, including little-known anecdotes from the lives of such personages as Napoleon, Longfellow, the Honor Guard of the Unknown Soldier, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Through it all, he pulls from a large knowledge base of scripture to illuminate his personal observations and inspiration.

This is a gentle, heartening collection of feel-good stories which will inspire and uplift readers. The author draws deeply from a scriptural background and provides new insight for individuals at any stage in their spiritual journey. Although the author occasionally strays into political territory and makes his convictions known, overall, his message is simply one of encouragement and motivation. His passion for enlightening others and assuring them of their incredible gifts and innate goodness is evident throughout this work. McClendon’s book can serve as a devotional, guidebook, or cozy read, whichever the audience needs most in their journey.
