"Instead of brute firepower, they have to rely on stealth and the element of surprise. It is dead quiet. The sky is a rusty gray."

A massive solar flare hits Earth, knocks out power, fries nearly all electronics, and causes chaos and a breakdown in society. Greg Stern is fortunate enough to be warned about the danger by a friend who works at the NSA. He gathers his family and all the supplies he can and leaves their California town for a cabin they own in the mountains, fully prepared to face the uncertain future. However, when a man goes missing from a neo-Nazi group that is terrorizing the area, the cabin dwellers’ comfortable living conditions become known. The neo-Nazis attack the family and their friends and take control of their cabin, killing Greg’s mother and grievously wounding his wife in the attack. Greg and his sons must find allies to help save Greg’s wife and regain control of their cabin.

Feye’s post-apocalyptic novel is a quick read with plenty of action to maintain interest. Her writing is clear and easy to read, and the pace is constantly pushing towards the book’s conclusion. The cast of characters is varied, which Feye uses to create additional tension in the book. Although the mystery aspect of the novel is a bit underdeveloped, fans of the genre will know what to expect and should enjoy the tale. The action scenes don’t disappoint, and the way Feye portrays different individuals and groups dealing with the catastrophic event is engaging. Not only will the book appeal to genre lovers, but those interested in the connected subjects of prepping for a future disaster will also find plenty to capture their attention.
