Scheel uses a curious blend of biblical concepts and characters from Greek and Norse mythology to create this fantastical tale of gods, demons, angels, magic, and multiple dimensions. This third installment of The Underworlds series explores the depth of pain associated with the loss of a child and sharply contrasting responses to grief. Denida and Nina are both traumatized by the murder of their son, Daniel. Rather than leaning on one another for comfort and support, the couple allows their mutual tragedy to divide them.
Battling regrets and self-recriminations, Denida is determined to right his past mistakes and protect the family and friends he has left. When Lucifer offers a chance to ensure the safety of Denida’s loved ones in exchange for Denida completing a seemingly impossible task, Denida has no choice but to entertain the offer despite the inherent risk involved. Nina falls into a state of paralyzing depression following her son’s death. But when sadness turns into anger and resentment, Nina embarks on an equally dangerous mission of vengeance and retribution.
Similarly named characters, a storyline that jumps between realms, and identical characters in multiple dimensions make for a sometimes confusing read. But fans of the series will enjoy this fast-paced, action-packed continuation of The Underworlds saga. The book is full of guns blazing, fireball throwing, and a staggering number of epic battles. With a highly entertaining spin on the creation story, a worlds-changing prophecy, and some diabolical characters, Scheel generates anticipation for the next glimpse into the world he has crafted for his readers.
