Tadesse lived in fear in Oromia, Ethiopia, due to her Oromo heritage, facing discrimination alongside others like her. The transition from monarchy to socialism brought new challenges, particularly for Christian Oromos, who were often suspected and targeted by the government. Eventually, the author and her husband, Daniel Daffa, were arrested and separated for several months, during which Tadesse feared for her husband's life. They eventually managed to escape this difficult situation and moved to the United States. In 2012, they founded C.G. Women's Empowerment (CGWE), a nonprofit organization focused on creating economic self-sufficiency for women and children, ensuring their safety from violence and discrimination, and empowering them to build better futures.
