Return of the Ancients: The Huntress Trilogy (Book Three)
by Paul Fletcher
PageTurner Press and Media

"Pyros with several fire balls in each paw is watching patiently for the enemy to group."

The Kharree are a race of intelligent dragons, or drakes, who each have remarkable abilities tied to an element, like fire, water, or time. Mira is a NonKharree who originally went out to hunt them for attacking her village. After battling them, she later learns their language and lifestyle and becomes a part of their tribe. The drakes have recently discovered a library with rumors of an ancient Kharree city. They form a small group to investigate, hoping to learn more about the past. They ask Mira and her drake mate, Kajika, to lead the small band. Furry beasts attack them during the journey, and Mira is critically wounded. They meet an ancient guardian in the city who tries to heal her. However, he isn't sure if it will be possible because she isn't a drake.

This book is the third installment in Fletcher's series. The drakes and their abilities are inventive, and this creates an interesting culture with a slight twist on magic. Clearly a fantasy series, the protagonists find their quest in the search for the lost city and face perils along the way, typical of the genre. The descriptions of the places and drakes are not as engaging as they could have been, and the overall narrative would have benefitted if they had been rendered and explored in greater detail. However, dragons are popular amongst fantasy readers, and this series features them as some of the main protagonists, which is sure to garner some fans. Also, the magical elements and mysterious city that help create this adventure will offer enough to keep the book's audience reading and interested.
