Everything changes for Liz when she learns her starship captain has been murdered and the main suspect is her highly intelligent boyfriend, Bryce. Now in command, she sets out to hunt him down and find out what is going on. When she captures him, she is commanded by the Alliance, for whom she works, that he is not to be questioned by anyone. Realizing that bigger things are at play, Liz begins digging into the Alliance. She discovers a secret organization within the Alliance, the Order, pulling strings and acting in ways she can't believe. To expose the Order, Liz goes rogue and commandeers a pirate vessel. She soon learns that powerful forces throughout the galaxy are in conflict over ancient alien technology, and she steps right into the center of the maelstrom that this creates.
From the first page to the last, what is most apparent is that Roberts enjoys crafting fast-paced adventure stories. This science fiction tale is packed with combat, aliens, technology, and swashbuckling. Roberts' writing is clear and detailed enough to give the reader a good idea of the action that is occurring. The chapters are concise, and new complications and plot twists occur often. All of this works well to keep the reader turning pages. However, around the middle of the book, the constant changes and additions to the plot become confusing and sometimes contradict or ignore material introduced in previous chapters. Still, many will undoubtedly enjoy joining the protagonist on a bold journey racing at light-speed into a universe-shaping space saga.
