Sustained: Grieving in the Hands of Jesus
by Hanna Marmalich
WestBow Press

"In His nearness in my brokenness, I see His love conquer the loss I carry and redirect my eyes to a hope and a future."

Author Marmalich intertwines her experience of loss and grief with spiritual counsel for others, based on her Christian beliefs and accrued wisdom, in this dynamic treatise focusing on the passing of her mother. Having dedicated herself to her mother's health, upon her death, the author experienced shock, dismay, and sometimes even a sense of desertion by the God she had for so long believed in and relied upon. Her reactions varied, though, based upon such happenings as a proliferation of butterflies flocking around the gravesite displaying vibrant colors, the enjoyment of curling up in her mother's housecoat, looking at her old photographs, and organizing her possessions, all evoking tender memories that mercifully placated her anger towards God for taking her loved one away.

Etheric messages, both inwardly and biblically received, began to infuse comfort and joy—"a glimpse into the heart of God," demonstrating his generous, munificent oversight. As time passed, the author expanded and enhanced her knowledge of scripture, discovering and sharing biblical phrases and parables related to her sadness and need. Still, grief might reappear in sudden waves, implanting the sense that it is always thus for those who suffer pangs of irretrievable loss. It is this pattern, which seemed endless though slowly waning, that prompted Marmalich's urge to compose this emotive treatise to be shared with those similarly suffering and seeking new spiritual pathways.

Marmalich, a mental health advocate and best-selling author, here combines both achievements in a work that boldly proffers her personal, often distressing memories, while opening the possibility of ameliorating the sufferings of her intended audience. In honestly revealing and reviewing her deep exploration of loss and sorrow, Marmalich opens the door to the spiritual sustenance inherent in the intimate understanding of God's eternal willingness to guide and guard all who reach out to him.
