Kurt Farin finds himself drawn to a woman residing in the depths of a bottomless ocean. She calls to him, and he feels compelled to follow. However, this is only an image that his brain conjures as he struggles to recover from a bullet wound and a concussion. Kurt is a former doctor turned detective who was injured while investigating the murder of a young woman. Despite his temporary coma, the woman in the dream has etched herself firmly in his mind. The woman’s name is Genevieve Lucas, and Kurt is resolved to find her. His injury has left him without a badge, but he finagles his partner to join him on a trip to Seattle and possibly beyond so he can ease his mind’s suffering.
The mystery that encapsulates this gripping story starts down in the depths of the frigid waters and continues at a progressive pace throughout the book. The identity of the woman in Kurt’s dreams is not the sole conundrum, as each answer serves as merely a clue to an even larger puzzle. Kurt refuses to relinquish his investigative role despite lacking any official capacity because not solving the case could unravel his already bruised mind. One of the alluring aspects of the plot is how the fragility of Kurt’s mind leads to everyone in his orbit being suspect, and every surprise is genuine. This is a fine book with an excellent premise and a rewarding conclusion that will leave the reader ready for more from this innovative writer.
