The Calling
by George Patton Bargas

"I knew of God but didn't really know God."

Bargas’ book is divided into two parts. The first is “The Journey,” while the second is “The Calling.” The book tells the story of a young man who grows up in the Christian faith. He enlists and is sent to Vietnam to fight. The author ultimately engages in many battles in which he sees not only the members of the Viet Cong tortured and killed but also civilians and close friends, one of whom he feels strongly was an angel sent by God to protect him from harm. During the multiple horrors of battle, Bargas, plagued by nightmares, finds relief in killing, as well as in abusing drugs and alcohol. His destruction continues until he is declared mentally unfit and sent home.

Alone, without faith, and with terrible war trauma, the author attempts suicide three times. He spends some time in prison, experiences a feeling of the presence of demons, and undergoes shock therapy. He also goes through multiple marriages, two of which end in divorce. The second part describes his road to recovery and the peace and security he feels in finding God.

This poignant story gives the reader a true appreciation of the healing power of God. It also reveals the author's unflinching honesty, not only about his war experiences but also about the problems that he and others experienced prior to his recovery and redemption. Bargas candidly admits that he "is not really involved in his community, as he has found it difficult to trust people." He loves his grandchildren, however, "in a way he never thought possible." This story may be valuable to veterans and others who are seeking to heal after their own major traumas. Bargas' narrative also emphasizes that finding the love of God is possible for everyone.
