This cozy mystery begins with Edgar Eldridge, who posts a beautiful sea captain's house for sale in Cape Cod. He talks to Hannah, a ghost who scared off the last owners. Besides the ghosts, there is also a curse. Rachel sees the ad, and she and her husband, Ryan, visit the house. Rachel is enamored, and they buy it, ghosts and all. But Rachel finds out Ryan isn't the man she thought she married. When Ryan has to go on the run, Rachel keeps the house, turning it into a bed and breakfast, and is transformed from a naïve individual into a savvy businesswoman. She hires Nikki, who turns out to have her own issues, but the two women make a good team. But what about the man Chase that Rachel meets and befriends? And how does everyone get along with the ghosts? And where does Edgar Eldridge fit into the story?
Bevans' novel covers a lot of topics, which makes for an interesting read. The part about the ghosts and the curse is engaging, and the reader never knows how the ghosts are going to respond. Dealing with the curse is also a surprise. The book examines mobsters, murder, sexual trauma, a hurricane, relationships, and sex. It shows Rachel's personal and professional development, although her quick marriage to Ryan is left mainly unexplored. Otherwise, the characters, especially Chase, Edgar, Nikki, and the ghosts, are appropriately developed. This is a fun, quick, quirky, and easy read to satisfy ghost-story fans.
