"He looked down at the bullet wound in his arm. It bled black ooze, not blood. He smiled as he saw that his wound was close to healed…"

Rachael Morgan is the lead scientist on a project working on a cure for the flu. Her team manages to successfully eliminate the virus in a patient with a new compound, but the side effects are lethal and turn the corpse into a ravenous zombie which can spread the zombie state through bites. The vice president’s wife and a military general see huge profit and potential in the compound. They declare it government property and find a small town in Texas on which to experiment. However, the zombies break the containment, and soon, the entire state of Texas is quarantined as the zombie outbreak creates havoc. Rachael, along with some military men who want a cure rather than profit and potential, fight to find a cure. Meanwhile, the government sees a chance to use this for global supremacy and needs to silence Rachael in order to be the only entity who controls the cure.

Zombie tales are abundant and require an author to add a twist for their story to stand out. Mailey achieves this by setting his story firmly in the conspiracy realm. The government not only knows about what is happening but is also funding the horror and using its own citizens as test subjects. In addition, Mailey’s writing is at its best during action scenes, and those who want exciting battles alongside their zombie plagues will be completely entertained. The setup of the story is a little rough, and the multiple characters entering and exiting among the various infighting can be confusing at times. However, readers who love conspiracy theories and the abuse of power will find that Mailey offers an entertaining take on the zombie genre centered on a corrupt government.
