Cooperation is a wonderful thing, especially when it comes to telling the time. Unfortunately, one clock has more than she can stand with the numbers on her face, who get up to all kinds of antics despite her pleas for them to stop. They chase each other around, make noise, tease one another, and refuse to settle down. At last, the clock has enough of their mischief and rejects them. Left to their own devices, each number pursues a new occupation, such as teaching or helping at the Olympics. Meanwhile, the clock fills in the spaces once occupied by the numbers with letters to represent gentle concepts like “Tranquility” and “Obedient.” However, there are hints that it might not be too long before the letters start to cause some mischief of their own.
This fully illustrated tale of playful numbers has several refreshing twists that make for a fun read. Young children are sure to connect with the antics of the numbers, their interest in having a good time, and their difficulties sitting still. But they are also more than likely to sympathize with the poor clock, who just wants a little peace and quiet. The ability to easily connect with all the characters is one of the best ways in which this tale shines, and there is a good lesson here about the importance of each person choosing the job or position that makes them happy. Hickman has written a very wholesome book and one appropriate for sharing at bedtime or during story times.
