For many people, there is only one reality. For Sheila in Gurugram, India, realities are split. One part of her life, she lives in the city with her husband and daughter. The other reality of her life exists in a place called Gudem. When she closes her eyes, she wakes up in this alternate reality, beside castle walls. An evil holds power over minds like Sheila's. It resides in Gudem yet transcends physical limits. When crossovers begin to pop up from Gudem in Gurugram, Sheila can no longer hide the dual realities. Her husband files for divorce, and she doesn't blame him. The hardest part is when the court rules that her daughter, Diya, is unable to stay with her. Separated from her mother, Diya starts to exhibit strange powers, such as making things happen when she blinks.
Switching perspectives from Sheila to Diya as evil tightens its grip and Diya's powers grow and develop allows for a unique way to reveal the interconnectedness of mother and daughter, showing how they have tapped into some of the same powers. The evil that is older than time itself carries dark undertones similar to Sauron in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series. Evil looms up like a storm covering up the whole sky, always there, at the edges, intervening, and fluid in its reach. Even the supernatural or superheroes culture pays a brief visit, with Sheila's powers' origin story of falling through an open manhole. What stands out most is the likeness to the vast worlds of Minecraft. The shore of rainbow hue, the castle, the magical ocean, and a darkness akin to an underworld or swarms of nighttime creatures call to mind a video game landscape. Facing up to a final boss, Diya may have met her match.
