Some readers seem determined to stick in the grounded work of nonfiction or traditional fiction. Meanwhile, fantasy is sometimes treated coldly or neglected by many. In cases like this book, in particular, that is unfortunate. This is because it can easily stand on its own merits and successfully intrigue even the most causal of bookworms.
Lieutenant David Durant and his band of survivors are getting good at running for their lives. Yet, there is an element of muted sadness as he and his men struggle to survive another tumultuous adventure. The novel contains numerous illustrations that perfectly capture both their plight and the dark imagery of war. They are hunted by ravenous monsters disguised as men, creatures that take advantage of the world's protracted conflicts and dominate all humanity.
The real triumph of the book is that melancholy and bittersweet emotions dominate so effectively. The narrative presents the reader with a flurry of dynamic characters and scenarios told in a charmingly muted fashion. The tale benefits substantially from its irresistibly authentic execution and vivid and engaging protagonists. The pace of the book is relaxed but confident. The visuals are profoundly engaging and form easily in the reader's mind. The author never forces anything. The storyline takes its time to slowly blossom, and readers will enjoy it when it does just that with loving care. This work is a great addition to any library and was clearly a labor of love from its author. Families should read it together because there will be plenty to talk about regardless of how new they are to this country. Gripping and spellbinding, Pierce's book is a must-read.
Pierce's book one in this series was the winner of the 2021 Eric Hoffer Book Award E-Book Fiction Category.
