Written from the premise that guardian angels are all around us, Guarnieri’s book is about three humans whose angels try to protect them from evil. Blyana, as hard as she tries to stay clean, continues to fall prey to drugs. Even after winning millions of dollars and impressing her CEO boss, she cannot destroy the battle within and succumbs. Boaz, her guardian angel, tries to give Blyana strength but to no avail. Ajax struggles to discover why he has been put on the earth, and in so doing, ignores the warnings of his angel, Aitan. Although Zuberi is secretly interested in learning more from the missionaries who live in his village, he fears his family will kill him if he goes against the Qur’an. Conversion to Christianity would dishonor his family, and he vacillates between praying to Allah and praying to Jesus. Sloan, his guardian angel, is concerned that Zuberi will soon have to choose between eternal life and eternal death.
Guarnieri writes with compassion for both the humans and their guardian angels. While Blyana, Ajax, and Zuberi take on their individual earthly struggles, their three guardian angels fight against the Dark One and the dark soldiers. Protecting their earthly charges is their sole job, and the author describes their mission with heartfelt empathy. The guardian angels, too, understand that temptations are all around for their humans, and yet they love them regardless. The author’s love for humanity is palpable in this creative novel. Guarnieri’s deep belief that we are never alone and that all we need to do when we are feeling lonely is to ask for divine guidance is uplifting. Readers who enjoy inspiring tales of heavenly protection and intervention might find this book to be just what they are seeking.
