Since the death of her partner, Tessa isn’t held in the highest esteem by the security and covert operations company for whom she works. However, with agents missing and whispers of something unnatural going on, she is chosen for the job. Dismissing her assigned partner, she tracks down a man most believe to be dead, a traitor, or both and asks him for help. In a small town near an ancient archeological site, crime lords are inexplicably showing up and not leaving. After being warned to stay away, the pair arrive in the town and immediately draw the attention of the inhabitants. The local sheriff makes a point of showing that he is in charge and that he likes what he sees in Tessa. It is also clear that he typically gets what he wants and has a strange magnetism to him. To complicate matters, Death has a habit of showing up where only Tessa can see her and inviting Tessa to kill.
MacArthur’s mix of the paranormal and tough, savvy private investigators is surely going to delight readers. The protagonists’ spy-like abilities and confidence, blended with their personal chemistry, make them a great pair, much like the stars of classic TV shows. The supernatural elements are done well and not overplayed. In a couple of instances, the banter doesn’t fit the moment, but these immersion-breaking times are few and quickly left behind. This book will be an easy hit for those readers who love stories about paranormal investigations but will also pull readers who are more interested in action-packed stories involving intelligent agents. It will likely be a fan favorite and a book easy to recommend to a friend.
