The SnowMom
by Lynette Catalano
Trafford Publishing

"Perhaps some might say, in that field on that cold winter’s night, a miracle happened."

Catalano's new work is a picture book about a SnowMom who forms during a snowstorm. Debbie Rosemeyer King adeptly illustrates it. The SnowMom sings to the animals in the woods and takes care of them. She tells them stories, feeds them, and teaches them about trust, love, and faith. One day, the SnowMom and the animals hear a scream. They rush to the sound to discover that three children have fallen through the ice of a frozen lake. The SnowMom and the animals will need to react quickly if they want to help the children.

There are many books on the market about snow and snow people, but what sets them apart are the illustrations and the quality of the writing. The illustration style here is simple, but the artwork is bright and cheerful and will be easy for children to access. The story itself is upbeat and has echoes of many similar children's classics set during winter. However, the story's overall effectiveness would be enhanced by some additional editing for narrative flow and structure. Still, with its positive message and accessible artwork, there will undoubtedly be many children who enjoy this book. It also works well with the genre's common theme of a sense of magic and wonder about snow. It proposes that all those snow figures built by children across the world originate with the SnowMom. This story will warm the hearts and imaginations of children on a cold winter's night and may very well become a favorite tale for casual reading or bedtime.
