This is a sweet story about a little boy named Austin who wakes up one day to find that every animal on his farm has changed their sound. Austin is delighted but also confused. How did this happen? The dog is sounding like a rooster, and the duck can moo like a cow. It’s all so exciting but confusing too. In all the time that Austin has played with his beloved farm animals, he has never heard them make these different sounds. After investigating further, Austin realizes that the changing sounds are only for God the Creator to understand. The mystery is solved the following day when Austin wakes up to find that the animals’ voices are all back to their rightful sounds.
The author includes playful illustrations of the animals and adds scripture to the front cover: Genesis 1:26. Young readers will enjoy the bold and bright colors of the farm. Although readers trust that Austin’s parents or guardians are close by, the author does not include them in any of the illustrations, perhaps as a way to encourage his young readers to feel empowered and confident as the heroes of their own story. The Christian-themed picture book highlights the magical ways that God works. The author seems to be saying that there are some things in his world that one may not understand, but they are always to be trusted. Parents who wish to reinforce this idea to their young children will be delighted by Mullens’ picture book.
