Stella Delray is a beautiful young woman who, along with friend Susan Paxton, is approached at London's National Portrait Gallery by a "tall and very smart, middle aged looking gentleman" who invites them to join him for coffee at Café Mumbai. Buford Maunder, a film producer from Buffalo, New York, offers the two girls the chance of a lifetime: to take three months in Los Angeles where they will be groomed at the Acting Academy and, hopefully, given a role in the movie Confessions of a Lifeguard. After realizing Buford is on the level, the girls embark on this adventure and find themselves sharing a luxury apartment in Santa Monica. When Susan falls in love and marries one of the film's directors, the two friends find themselves on different paths. Thus begins Stella's adventures in the movie industry and in the lives of a variety of men.
