In this second book in a series, Tom and Lovey head to the Southwest as they follow a pungent odor that Tom has encountered before. Tom is searching for the truth about his friend and mentor, Red Deer, who disappeared after an event in the sweat lodge they had built together. Tom and Lovey meet many trials and mysterious occurrences on their journey. Both are showing signs of supernatural forces within them, especially Lovey, who has become a shapeshifter and turns into a panther. Both are having visions and dreams which seem to lead them to the Four Corners area where Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado meet. What they encounter there is pure evil. Will they escape these evil forces and find the answers they seek?
One of the most interesting aspects of this story is its perfect setting. The supernatural events and the caverns located on the Navajo Reservation make a good pairing for this supernatural horror tale. “Whatever was happening to Tom, it appeared to be accelerating, as though he was falling into some psychogenic chasm, much deeper than the one over which they stood.” The author also brings in fascinating descriptions of the culture and religion of the Navajo Nation. Myth also plays an important role in the story, and Jerry captures all these aspects in a tale that will have one eagerly reading until the end. There is a lot of gore as Tom and Lovey make their way to the Southwest, along with plenty of catch-your-breath moments. The cliffhanger ending leads one to think there’s another book in the planning. Fans of supernatural thrillers with a side of graphic battles will enjoy this one.
