The author’s book is a collection of poems written over a seven-year span, beginning when the author was fourteen. During that period, she had a long crush which she wrote about extensively that ended in rejection. Towards the end of the time period, another romantic interest entered the picture. The poems explore her emerging feelings about her new affections and the confusion and obsession that can be a part of those feelings at a young age. There are many poems about unrequited love and managing desire for someone who only shares feelings of friendship. There are also poems about how it feels when that obsessive love ends, and what it is like to try to open up to someone again after being hurt and becoming more guarded with emotions. The poems are genuine and heartfelt and occasionally include popular cultural references.
Simon writes many of her poems in free verse, although a few are prose poems. She uses some standard rhyme and repetition, but the technique she uses best, and most often, is internal rhyme. Through this literary device, she turns her best phrases. The reader approaching the collection as a whole will see her childlike naivety and obsessive feelings begin to mature towards the end as she gains more life experience. The emotional journey of the main persona is engaging. The author’s target audience appears to be young females who will likely feel as if someone just like them is speaking about their actual experiences. Those in this age group, especially ones who are exploring their confusing and changing emotions, may find this book a gift to be cherished.
