Centuries ago, the Santa Teresa departs from Portugal with José Nevarez as its captain. Heading for the Brazilian colonies, Nevarez boasts that the ship is safe enough to not only carry himself, his crew, and the cargo, but their families as well. Tragically, when a giant wave capsizes the Santa Teresa, those still conscious must make a desperate attempt to save themselves. A priest and some of the crew’s children make their way to a fishing boat and reach a deserted island which they name Santa Teresa. Cast away and forced to survive, they create a small community and live isolated from the world. In the modern day, that very same island becomes a battleground between an oil company, the United States military, and a group of notorious pirates all vying for power and fortune.
With a narrative that spans half a millennium, this book contains a lot of variance and plenty of surprises in store for the reader. Though the audience meets characters in Portugal and the United States, the open sea serves as the catalyst that moves the plot forward in all of its phases. From the doomed voyage of the Santa Teresa to the climactic fight between the heroes and the villainous pirates, readers should expect the unexpected whenever the characters leave the safety of dry land. Action, drama, and even romance intertwine to create an experience sure to leave readers guessing what will happen next. Like the untamed ocean itself, this story oscillates between peaceful character development one moment and upheaving what the audience expects furiously and without remorse in the next.
